First, I would like to personally say thank you for choosing to visit our site! Premier Martial Arts Academy is the top MMA and karate training facility in Northern Kentucky. We teach Attsuuten-ryu kempo-jutsu: modern kempo taught in the traditional Okinawan style. No big, fancy moves that you have to be an acrobat to perform, just VERY practical and efficient self-defense training that focuses on the development of power through proper body motion, rather than having to rely on strength to overcome an attacker.
A modern derivative of the original teachings of Okinawan kempo, Attsuuten-ryu kempo-jutsu is a striking art developed by Sensei Michael S. Peterson. Mr. Peterson is founder and Grand Master of Attsuuten-ryu kempo-jutsu, and after years of development, was inducted into the U.S. Martial Arts Hall of Fame as "Founder: Attsuuten-ryu kempo-jutsu" by the International Martial Arts Council of America (IMAC) in August of 2008. He has an extensive background in Okinawan karate, having starting his studies in Los Angeles, California at the age of 14 in the art of Isshin-ryu. He has been inducted into multiple martial arts hall of fames and was awarded an honorary Ph.D. in Martial Arts Philosophy from the University of Asian Martial Arts Studies, Department of Martial Arts Affairs, recognized by the International Council/Chapter of Higher Martial Arts Education for his extensive knowledge in pressure point applications and human anatomy as it pertains to the martial arts. He currently holds the office of Kentucky State Representative for IMAC.
The following paragraphs are intended to describe Attsuuten-ryu kempo-jutsu at an adult level. Understand that the development of any martial art is done so with the adult in mind. When training children and teen-agers, the overall goal of the instructors is to develop the necessary skills needed to prepare them for adult training. Since there is a very high level of responsibility involved with the complete understanding of these techniques, students prior to the age of 18 will focus on a pre-adult foundational curriculum that DOES NOT include the in-depth study of pressure point manipulation or the more aggressive and straight-forward self-defense techniques that are found within this art.
Attsuuten-ryu kempo-jutsu is the art of conserving energy and learning to strike small targets on the body in order to incapacitate an attacker and give YOU the advantage. It utilizes both Kyusho-jitsu (pressure point striking) and Tuite-jitsu (pressure point grappling and joint manipulation), as well as concepts found in Kali and other forms of Silat. It integrates the basic knowledge of both the musculoskeletal and nervous systems to form a complete understanding of the human body, in order to exploit its weaknesses and capitalize on them. It stresses the development of power without the use of strength by using proper body motion. It uses pressure points as a means to weaken the body in order to set up defensive attacks, not as a primary tool to knock out your opponent while they stand still in front of you, as other pressure point-based arts might practice. It is by no means a sport art, and students of this incredibly practical and efficient form of self-defense do not participate in tournaments or other competitions due to the lack of sport training or point sparring in the dojo. There are no traditionally taught blocks in this art, rather all defensive moves are considered to be simultaneously offensive and consequently labeled "strikes", as a block by itself has no offensive application and can lead to self-injury. It is taught that the elbows are used as a means of blocking strikes to the body, but, just as previously mentioned, this still imparts pain and/or injury to the attacker, and would be considered simultaneously offensive. Since any physical attack should be treated as a serious threat to YOUR safety and well-being, the techniques learned in this art are intended to be used full-force in all self-defense situations with little or no regard for the safety or well-being of the assailant. Understand that the techniques learned can be used by the student in moderation in order to lessen the level of damage to the attacker, but, as previously stated, it is an incredibly practical and efficient form of self-defense, and NOT intended to be, nor should it be even remotely considered anything less than exactly that. This art is a great supplemental martial art for those who have prior ranking in other arts, and since very little strength is needed to manipulate pressure points, Attsuuten-ryu kempo-jutsu is also a great martial art for both women and children. You don't need STRENGTH to bring an attacker twice your size to his knees, you just need the know-how!
In this art, it is believed that the use of kata is crucial in the development of proper technique. Attsuuten-ryu kempo-jutsu practitioners believe that kata (forms) do not represent direction of attacks, but positional techniques and pressure point striking for the defender. Concentration is made on physical precision of kata and bunkai (break-down and explanation of the movements) in order to build muscle memory. This muscle memory trains your body to make responsive actions reactionary in order to execute defensive moves without having to rely on the brain to analyze the situation at hand. Remember, thinking takes time! In a nutshell, your body will learn to defend itself on "auto-pilot". Because of this, defensive situations will be over in a matter of seconds, with very little time for conscious thought.
It may be true that 80% of fights end up on the ground, but we like to say that 100% of them START standing up, and although Attsuuten-ryu kempo-jutsu stresses the importance of a solid stand-up defense, it does recognizes the possibility of an attacker successfully taking you to the ground. Because of this possibility, the study of combative jujitsu is also offered as supplemental training for all adults and teens. As a defensive art, Attsuuten-ryu kempo-jutsu gives students the versatility of developing both stand-up and ground fighting skills, in order to more successfully defend themselves.
Classes are run very personally... you won't disappear into the crowd here! Sensei Michael Peterson personally teaches every class with enthusiasm and passion along with his Chief Instructor, Sensei Laura Hisle. They have but one objective night after night... that the students leave the evening's class with no questions about anything that was taught. Sensei Mike says, "I want the students to understand EVERYTHING I teach. The only reason a student should leave MY dojo with questions in his or her head, is because that question was never asked."
Welcome to Premier Martial Arts Academy... and welcome to Attsuuten-ryu kempo-jutsu!
